Herpes Simplex

Herpes simplex is an infection caused by HSV-1 or HSV-2 that can recur.

It may cause burning and painful, fluid-filled blisters around the lips or genital area.

Diagnosis is assessed through examination and may be confirmed with a sample from a lesion.

Antiviral medicines can reduce the duration or frequency of outbreaks but do not remove the virus from the body.

Transmission is possible without visible sores, and symptoms during pregnancy or immune suppression require prompt medical assessment.
