Scabies is a contagious skin infestation caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei.
It causes itching that is often worse at night and spreads mainly through prolonged close skin contact.
Treatment involves topical or oral medicines that target the mites, selected after medical assessment.
Treating close contacts at the same time and appropriately cleaning clothing and bedding help prevent reinfestation.
Itching may continue for a while after successful treatment, but new burrows or rashes require reassessment.
